631-287-8313Southampton, NY - Dr. Arvind Borde, a mathematics professor and coordinator of the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Program at Southampton College, received the Long Island University Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement (TASA) for 2004. He was honored this past week at the C.W. Post campus along with recipients from the other campuses of Long Island University. This is the second time he has been honored with this award, the first in 1996.
Each year Long Island University honors faculty members from its three main campuses for an outstanding scholarly achievement or a body of work accomplished during their lifetime.
With 17 years of teaching, this is a distinguished honor for Borde, who has concentrated his research on a variety of subjects from black holes to the existence of singularities in cosmology. His expertise in computer programming led him to design, develop and maintain the Southampton College website from 1995 to 2000 as well as sites elsewhere.
Dr. Borde, a native of India, earned his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Bombay University in 1976 and went on to earn an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of British Columbia and then Syracuse University before taking a teaching position at Southampton College where he has been since 1987. He has served in visiting professorships on numerous college campuses including M.I.T. and Tufts University.
Dr. Borde has published over twenty mathematical and scientific papers and has co-written a hypertext encyclopedia and an introductory book on computer typesetting among others. He has received several grants for research from Long Island University and continues to maintain a busy schedule of teaching, visiting other campuses, attending conferences and publishing.
