Southampton, NY - The Institute for Sustainable Development will release its new Environmental Education website at Southampton College's Earth Fest, Saturday, April 24th. "The website, www.631enviroed.org, is a new tool for environmental educators in Suffolk County," says Professor and Institute Co-Director Scott Carlin. "Teachers can use the site to learn about online environmental curricula and over 75 regional environmental education organizations."

The new web site will provide a centralized place for teachers to find out about the many environmental education programs already offered in Suffolk County through numerous organizations ranging from Atlantis Marine World to Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons. By going to the web site, teachers can quickly discover links to teaching programs, field trips, and contact information.

Through a variety of new programs, Southampton College has become a regional leader in environmental research and education. In the area of energy conservation the College hosts a 10kW wind turbine, fuel cells, and its new library will utilize geothermal technology. The College has also expanded its recycling program and plans to continue to improve its environmental performance.

The College hopes to partner with regional schools on future environmental education initiatives. According to Dr. Carlin, "Schools are learning that they can save thousands of dollars through energy conservation efforts. These investments are not only smart management choices; they are also wonderful opportunities for educating students about the benefits of energy conservation."

Funding for the project is made possible in part through a collaborative venture between Southampton College and Keep Islip Clean (KIC). KIC, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., promotes citizen participation to enhance and strengthen local neighborhoods and communities. Keep Islip Clean's education programs are supported by government grants and a private sector coalition that includes Coca-Cola NY, Pepsi, The Clare Rose Company, The American Plastics Council, and ITW Hi-Cone.

At this Saturday's Earthfest, teachers and environmental educators can learn more about the new website at the Institute's table at the Fine Arts Building. For more information, Dr. Carlin can be reached at (631) 287-8238.
