Southampton, NY - Southampton College Sophomore Tom Seals of Phoenix, AZ., was celebrated as "College Big Brother of the Year" for his continued work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner April 19 at the Millridge Inn in Hicksville.
"Tom brings a great deal of patience, commitment and enthusiasm to the children he works with and the overall program at Southampton College. He is an exceptional Big Brother and very deserving of this award," said Cindy Perrier, Program Coordinator for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Long Island.
Seals has participated in the program since his freshman year and has remained committed ever since, volunteering every semester. He was chosen as "College Big Brother of the Year" because his of long-standing commitment to mentoring, but more importantly, for his enthusiasm, compassion, and spirited attitude toward the children he has worked with. Seals has also supported the program by raising money for activities and recruiting other volunteers. He plans to continue volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout his college career. After graduation he hopes to attend graduate school, pursuing a doctorate degree, and then take a position researching whales.
"The Big Brothers Big Sisters Program is a great opportunity for Southampton College students," said Tara McCarthy, Director of Student Activities. "The end result is both positive and rewarding for everyone involved."
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Program at Southampton College meets Tuesday afternoons during the fall and spring semesters. The volunteers help their little brothers and sisters with their homework and participate in a variety of activities utilizing campus facilities. The program provides the children from Southampton and Bridgehampton Elementary Schools with one-to-one attention, friendship and support.
