Southampton, NY - Dr. Edward Carr, an internationally recognized expert in the field of developmental disabilities will speak at Southampton College on Tuesday, April 13 at 11 a.m. in Duke Lecture Hall. His talk "Understanding and Treating Problem Behavior in Autism," is part of the College's newly formed Psychology Colloquium, an organized series of informal meetings focused on challenging contemporary problems in mental health, psychobiology and psycho-educational advances.

Carr, a leading professor of child clinical/developmental disabilities in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University, was recently named one of only two researchers in the nation to earn a grant from the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) as a result of its 2003 Applied Research Competition. He received $30,000 from OAR for research that will serve as an effective tool for practitioners of developmental disabilities.

Carr's talk at Southampton College will focus on decreasing problem behavior in persons with autism by developing effective methods to assess the causes of the behavior and identifying factors to enable families and service providers to more effectively choose appropriate interventions to decrease or eliminate the behavior. His lecture takes place during Autism Awareness Month, a national effort aimed at creating a better understanding of the issues involved with Autism and its associated conditions.

Coordinator of the Psychology Program at Southampton College, Dr. William Discipio, heads the Psychology Colloquium, which consists of six other full-time professors, and will include topics such as case presentations by both faculty and students, difficult research design issues, ethics questions and professional/vocational opportunities. Future plans include additional invited field experts and community events.
