631-287-8313Southampton, NY - Southampton College and U.S. Congressman Timothy Bishop (D-Southampton) are again teaming up to provide a $10,000 art scholarship to the winner of the 2004 Congressional high school art contest. The winner of the 23rd annual competition will be announced during a reception on Sunday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. in the Avram Family Galleries at the College.
"It is a privilege for the College to honor the visionary talents of these creative young artists," said Southampton College provost Daniel Rodas. "The College and the surrounding communities offer a rich and stimulating environment to study the arts - museums, galleries, local artists and access to New York City. Our own Avram Galleries offer a variety of exhibitions each year by professional artists, faculty, and graduating art students. It's an exciting opportunity for this year's winner."
Congressman Bishop also offered his praise for the benefits of the art contest. "The contest is a wonderful opportunity to identify and encourage our nation's talented young artists," he said. It provides a showcase for their talent and continues Long Island's rich artistic heritage." The Congressman also thanked Southampton College for the scholarship offering and noted that its generosity will help these artists develop their creative talents while receiving a college education.
The winner's artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, alongside other scholarship recipients from across America. This year's panel of judges include two of Southampton College's art professors, Neill Slaughter and Paul Eastup.
Since the Congressional Art Competition debuted in 1982, members of the U.S. House of Representatives have conducted nearly 5,000 art competitions involving more than 650,000 high school students. For further information on the event call Congressman Bishop's District office in Southampton at (631)259-8450.
