631-287-8313Southampton, NY - Southampton College of Long Island University hosted a special scholarship dinner this past week for prospective incoming students and their families at the Wyndham Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge, NY. Each of the 41 high school seniors was presented a scholarship to Southampton College. The students came from all parts of Long Island, from Hampton Bays to Wantagh.
Rory Shaffer-Walsh, Director of Admissions for Southampton College, opened the evening with a humorous anecdote about shooting stars, encouraging the students towards their futures. "Your accomplishments are stellar and you are to be recognized and commended," said Shaffer-Walsh.
Southampton College Provost Dan Rodas then welcomed all attendants, describing the exciting changes going on at the College, such as the state-of-the-art Bishop-Burke Library, scheduled to be completed before students begin classes in the fall of 2004, the new $3.5 million structure at the Marine Station that will include at least seven laboratories, two classrooms, office space and a 1,000-square-foot marine mammal holding facility. Current Southampton College students Joslyn Mills and Todd Tuthill both took the podium as well, discussing their academic experiences thus far at Southampton College.
Established by Long Island University in 1963, Southampton College has produced 37 Fulbright Scholars in the last 25 years, many from its nationally recognized marine and environmental science programs. This small campus in the heart of the world-famous Hamptons is known for its writing and arts programs taught by many of the area's distinguished authors and artists, its SEAmester aboard a traditional sailing ship, and its Friend World Program of global education for social change. Southampton is the location of WLIU 88.3 FM, flagship of the Long Island Public Radio Network.
