Southampton College Lady Colonials Barrel Through Season

631-287-8313SOUTHAMPTON, NY- The Southampton College of Long Island University's Women's basketball team shines bright this season in the face of some difficult situations. The Lady Colonials are currently 19-8 in the season, ranking them as 2 overall in the NYCAC with Philadelphia. The Lady Colonials begin the NYCAC Tournament Wednesday March 3, 2004 against Dowling at home.
Senior captain center Nyree Frazier, who finished the 2003-04 season with 203 rebounds, averaging 7.5 a night, in 23.7 minutes on the court, was second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.6 for a season total of 313 points. Freshman guard Leah Getz averaged 12.7 points a night, first on the team in scoring average, along with grabbing 5 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists and a total of 85 for the season. Getz scored a total of 344 points her freshman season, also a team high. She was top-five in 19 statistical categories, leading the team in points, free throw attempts, points average and assists. These two led the team to its impressive record.
It was a team effort and every player contributed. Senior guard Jaime Podjed, who scored 8.7 points per game and averaged 2.8 assists per game started 19 games and played in 27. Senior forward Jill Jensen averaged 9.6 points per game and played in 21 games starting 15 with 18 blocks. Senior co-captain guard Katie Kenny started 15 games and played in 25 averaging 3.4 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game. Senior forward/center Jen Geiger started 7 games and played in 24 averaging 5.1 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. Junior forward Kiley Lapointe averaged 5.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game she played in 27 games starting 23. Junior center Jenn McLoughlin played in 18 games starting 2, she averaged .8 points per game and 2.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Meagan Carrick started one game and played in 11, she played a supporting role and averaged 0.1 points per game. Freshman guard/forward Sarah Mahan started 4 games and played in 22 with a scoring average of 9.6 points per game. She also had 31 steals and 20 blocked shots.
This Lady Colonials team may have been the best-stocked team Pat McGunnigle has ever coached. "I am working with quality, skilled kids who are very versatile," he said. "Our players can really get up court in a hurry."
The NYCAC Tournament Quarterfinals begin Wednesday, March 3, with the Lady Colonials battling Dowling. The semifinals are Saturday, March 6, followed by the finals are on Sunday, March 7. The location for the semifinals and finals are to be determined.
