Southampton Edged out in Home Opener

631-287-8360Southampton, NY – Southampton’s Colonials men’s basketball team ran out of gas just short of the finish line on Tuesday night in their season home opener against Dowling College.
They lead 31-29 at the half, but in a nine-minute spell in the second fell apart to let Dowling take a 12-point lead with six minutes remaining. It was then that the pre-season drilling and scrimmages kicked in for Southampton, taking them on a 16 to six rampage.
Senior Leon Pursoo found fellow senior Joaquin Smits with: 21 seconds remaining to give the Colonials a brief 58-57 lead which Dowling’s freshman Genc Selimi negated 20 seconds later with a well timed three pointer, breaking Southampton’s back 60-58.
Pursoo finished the game with 14 points, five assists and four steals while senior Darrin Miller had 12 points and a career-high nine steals, including four steals in the games final 1:30.
Dowling improves to 1-1, 1-0 NYCAC while Southampton falls to 1-1, 1-0 NYCAC.
