631-287-8360Southampton, NY - The number one seeded Southampton Colonials today won a heartbreaker against the talented West Chester Universitys Golden Rams in front of a rowdy and good natured home crowd that kept singing throughout the game, despite the bitterly cold rain fall.
The Lady Colonials opened the scoring as Denise Domena scored her 14th goal of the year. West Chester equalized just before the end of first half play.
Southampton senior Asa Birgesdotter scored on a header set up by Paivi Kivisto in the second half to put Southampton back on top but against the run of play West Chester equalized once again, forcing overtime.
With a scoreless overtime, the game went into a penalty shoot out. From the start Corrine Morgan made a save to give the Lady Colonials the edge but the Rams defied the odds and the vocal home crowd to leave it to the last face off to decide the outcome. Caroline Svensson sealed the win after she blasted her kick into the back of the net to earn the Lady Colonials their first ever win in a NCAA playoff.
The Lady Colonials will now play Adelphi University on Sunday at Southampton in the NCAA regional second round. Adelphi beat Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2-0 in their first round match-up earlier in the day.
