“Yardage” Explores Intimacy, Zippers and Rubber at Southampton College
Artist Reception for Jil Weinstock to be Held Thursday September 23Contact:
Patricia Conway/Amanda Olsen
631-287-8313Southampton, NY – Jil Weinstock will exhibit her mysterious and evocative works in the Avram Gallery on the campus of Southampton College August 16 through September 24.
Weinstock, who lives and works in New York City, uses rubber and garments to capture and embody memories. The amber color of the rubber creates an effect very much like matter preserved through millennia in a dollop of petrified sap. The carefully arranged geometry of the pieces serves to accent the textures and dimensions of the enclosed object. Each material chosen is significant not only for its aesthetic qualities but also its symbolism- women’s nightgowns and hosiery, men’s dress shirts, and the notions that compose and compliment clothing, including zippers, boas, and strings of faux pearls.
“I am interested in formalism as well as updating the minimalist language,” said Weinstock. “These works are nostalgic and fragile, and somewhat of an ancestral worship. Fashion promises to reveal, but its purpose is to conceal; this is the fundamental flaw in the logic of fashion.”
Weinstock has exhibited extensively, both in New York and internationally. Her most recent shows were at Caren Golden Fine Art in Manhattan, Bryon Cohen in Kansas City, M.O., and Catherine Clark Gallery in San Fransisco. Her work has been displayed in both solo and group exhibitions across Europe, from London to Milan to Frankfurt.
“Yardage” is sponsored in part by Southampton Town the John P. McGrath Fund and the Avram family.
Avram Family Galleries are located in the Fine Arts Building on Southampton College’s 110-acre campus overlooking Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on Long Island’s East End. Both student works and those of professional artists are displayed in the 700 square foot facility. The facilities are named for Dr. Michael Avram, whose financial support made both the galleries and theater possible.
