Southampton, NY The works of three established Southampton College graduates will be on view in the Robert Munford Alumni Invitational in the Avram Gallery from February 2 through March 12. A special artists reception will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 4 to 6 p.m.
James Della-Volpe, who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1979, paints largely in oils. Many of his works, influenced by Matisse, are dominated by long rectangular forms that are defined by color rather than line. "I am interested in his joy of life reflected in his work, and of course, his use of patterns," he said of Matisse and the obvious focus on color in his own work. Della-Volpe, who has exhibited in both solo and group shows in many East End galleries, currently teaches at the Victor DAmico Art Barge in Amagansett, N.Y.

After earning her BFA in 1996, sculptor Linda Marbach went on to receive her masters degree from the CW Post campus of Long Island University. In her sculptures, clothing takes on the guise of armor. One framework she uses to mold clay on is an old dressmakers mannequin, another uses stiffened leather pressed into a clay body and her wall reliefs resemble defensive breastplates. Marbach, who has been honored with many awards for her work, is the manager of the Ceramics Studio at CW Post. In addition to teaching as an adjunct professor, she has shown in many exhibits on Long Island and in Manhattan.
Ruby Jackson has displayed her art in more than 25 exhibits including one of Manhattans most visible and prestigious venues the windows of Tiffanys. The sculptor established her credentials many years ago with engaging pieces that combined whimsy with bit of philosophical humor. More recent works have been inspired by several snorkeling adventures in Belize, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. "I try to capture the light, movement, exotic forms, colors and the interplay between plant and animal, in three-dimensional, polymer clay forms," she said of her work. "My intent is to create something that I've never seen before, built up layer by layer, like a coral reef." A resident of Sag Harbor, Jackson has exhibited widely in group and solo shows including many Long Island galleries. She was the recipient of a Best Sculpture Award at a members show in Guild Hall and created masks for John Lennon's band for a 1975 television special "Salute to Sir Lew Grade."
The event is named for the late Robert Munford, a beloved Southampton College Art Professor (1971-91) who painted in Europe and New York City before joining the College. In Ibiza during the 1950s, he joined Grupo Ibiza, a group of American and European artists who greatly influenced that era's Spanish art scene.
The Avram Gallery is open weekdays from 12 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Call Director Beth Giles for more information, (631) 287-8234.
