631-287-8313Southampton, NY - Southampton College of Long Island University offers a Tropical Field Studies course in Peru that provides a unique opportunity to study for three weeks in the Peruvian Amazon.
This biology/environmental science course is a fully accredited three-credit field program offered during the January 2005 wintersession. Study sites for the course vary each year and have included tropical ecosystems such as the Amazon River Basin of Brazil where the students studied the natural history, ecology and biology of this exotic area.
In Peru students will focus on project-oriented field studies (observational and experimental) that are undertaken during a three-week visit to a specific tropical region. Much of the travel on the trip will be by riverboat.
Another important aspect of this course is for students to learn about the cultures of indigenous people of the region. The course itinerary will include trips to museums, and visits to local markets and small villages. Additionally, students will time visiting the ancient Incan ruins. Cutting edge technology (e.g., Global Positioning Systems and the use of satellite maps of the areas visited) will aid students as they undertake projects in environmental science, ecology and tropical biology. There will also be ample time for hiking, wildlife observation, nature photography and river exploration by dugout canoe.
Information on the course may be obtained from Drs. Art Goldberg (631-287-8404) or Joe Warren (631-287-8390)
