Southampton, NY - Students, staff and state officials involved with the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at Southampton College of Long Island University gathered for a recognition ceremony this past week to honor the outstanding efforts those enrolled in the program.

Cheryl Franklin, Lisa Bowen, Chuck Hitchcock, Rebecca Molinaro, Judy Rockway, and Pat Carson.
Representing Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., an alum of Southampton College, Rebecca Molinaro presented citations to the HEOP seniors. "This program is essential for New York," said Molinaro. "We are proud of these students and how far they've come, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors."

Also in attendance were Chuck Hitchcock, Southampton College's Dean of Students, who gave a touching speech, Lisa Bowen, Assistant Director of Southampton College's HEOP and Pat Carson, the Director of the Liberty Partnership Program at the College.

One student, Serphaine Stimpson, was honored individually for her outstanding commitment to her education. Stimpson, a History/political science major from Brooklyn, N.Y., has maintained her drive and determination to succeed throughout her college career, excelling in the face of adversity.

"Our students have the courage to walk outside the familiar experiences of their families and venture into uncharted territory to fulfill their dreams," said Judith Rockway, Director of Southampton College's HEOP. "It takes persistence, perseverance, and determination to get there."

Exceptional scholars were rewarded for their achievements this year and each student enrolled in the program was acknowledged for their individual efforts.

The Higher Education Opportunity Program is a comprehensive academic support program designed for New York State residents who have not had educational opportunities which prepared them for college. The Southampton College HEOP staff members also provide academic, career, financial, social, and personal counseling for its students. Those who enroll are required to attend a five week intensive training course designed to help prepare them for college.
