The Runnin and Lady Colonials both look forward to promising seasons and are eager to reach out to larger audiences. "Im excited about the games being televised; weve got some hometown players, and its a great chance for people to become acquainted with the East Ends only NCAA basketball program," said mens head coach Pete Quinn, who will also be a guest commentator for several of the womens games. "Its also an opportunity for the players to showcase their skills and spread the word about our two exciting basketball teams."
Students from the Southampton College Arts and Media program are the eyes and ears bringing viewers this behind-the-scenes look at an NCAA basketball program.
The first games to be taped will be on December 2, a home doubleheader vs. St. Thomas Aquinas. It will be the league opener for the men. The games will air shortly after, with a schedule to be posted on the Southampton College news site www.southampton.liu.edu/news.
Southampton College mens basketball is on the rise. Two star returning players for the 2003-04 season include: 6-4 senior guard/forward Jye Watson and 6-2 junior guard Leon Pursoo. Watson, a co-captain, is on pace to graduate as one of the top-10 all-time scorers in Southampton College history. Over the years, several Southampton College basketball players have moved on to professional leagues overseas and Watson and Pursoo are currently being scouted by professional teams in Australia.
The 2003-04 Lady Colonials expect to continue their tradition of excellence. The team is full of seasoned upper-classmen along with the addition of promising freshmen, 5-foot-8 guard Leah Getz, of Hudson, Ohio, and 6-0 guard/forward Sarah Mahan from Oxford, Mass. Southampton College womens basketball has made the playoffs seven of the past nine years, winning two titles. The Lady Colonials are currently 2-1, 1-0 in the NYCAC.
Jeff Schaeffer, star of Southampton Colleges heralded theater troupe Southampton Players, will be the announcer for the televised games. Cameras will go into huddles, follow coaches and offer player interviews.
The televising of these games is part of an ongoing partnership between Southampton College and Channel 22, with production headed by the Southampton College Public Relations Office. In the near future, the College hopes to produce and broadcast an assortment of other events happening on campus. Already in production and on the air is an English as a Second Language course that is offered through Southampton Colleges Continuing Education program, "Careers on the East End" hosted by John McCrudden, Director of Cooperative Education and Internship program, The BrainWASH Lecture Series, Writers Talk Lecture Series and a recent political debate held on campus.
