631-287-8360Southampton, NY - Five Southampton College science and biology students will present their research findings on the state of East End waterways in an afternoon BrainWASH lecture on Wednesday, November 19 at 1:15 p.m. in the Colleges Duke Lecture Hall.
The students, Raymond Patelli, Michelle Weiss, Matthew Vilbas, Laura Metger and Patrick Curran, worked with Southampton Colleges natural science faculty in the new initiative SCERP (Southampton College Estuarine Research Program) assessing the environmental health of local estuaries.
The research group, recipients of a grant from the Tamarind Foundation, focused much of their summer work on vital marine habitats that have been subject to environmental degradation, including marsh and wetland ecosystems and eel-grass beds that serve as nursery environments for many Long Island fisheries.
Future projects for SCERP include monitoring the Peconic River, which receives discharge from Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Riverhead sewage treatment plant, and investigating causes of brown tides. SCERP will work over the next three years to educate citizens, policymakers and environmental managers about the findings of its research program.
The informal BrainWASH lectures, presented by the Natural Science Division of Southampton College, are free and open to the public. For further information on the series contact Professor Joe Warren at the College at (631) 287-8390 or joe.warren@liu.edu.
