Cogent, Iconic Sculptures at Southampton Colleges Avram Gallery
Reception for Artist Gabriele Roos to Be Held on Thursday, November 13Contact:
Patricia Conway (patricia.conway@liu.edu)
631-287-8313Southampton, NY Sculptor Gabriele Roos will exhibit recent works of compelling pieces in Southampton Colleges Avram Gallery from November 6 through December 5.
Roos, who is based in New York City, relishes the challenge of representing walls in her works, walls that separate and enclose, walls that shelter and walls that contain mystery. She began her artistic career as a painter; and her wall pieces, while totally three dimensional, maintain some of the compositional, spatial and frontal aspects of her earlier work. Her pieces emerge out of the walls and her carefully selected materials - rope, wheels, ladders, wood, concrete, metal - are transformed to suggest visual metaphors for human will.
"Some of the pieces are processional and ceremonial," said Roos. "Some have a primitive and totemic quality that evoke a contemplative mood amidst our super-active urban scene. They activate the wall and change the nature of the space. Most powerful in the natural sunlight they cast a constantly changing shadow that becomes an integral part of the sculptures themselves."
Her rigorously conceived compositions are about contrasts and contradictions hard versus soft, machine versus organic, co-existence versus conflict where she combines structure and deliberate geometries with more expressive impulses associated with the human spirit.
Roos has exhibited widely in New York and elsewhere. Her most recent solo shows were at Soho 20 in the Chelsea district of Manhattan and the Trenton City Museum in New Jersey and she has exhibited at East End venues Arlene Bujese Gallery in East Hampton and the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton. Her work is also represented in many important collections including Chase Manhattan Bank, Kennedy International Airport, the Bergen Museum, Loews Hotel of Monte Carlo and Chicagos OHare Airport among others.
The works will remain on view through Friday, December 5. A reception will be held on Thursday, November 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday through Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment by calling Gallery Director Beth Giles at (631) 287-8234.
