- Wallace A. Smith, General Manager and Program Director of WPBX, announced today that the station will present the first annual Jazz Lifetime Achievement Awards on July 5. The awards will be presented to nine Jazz Stars who have had a long association with the East End of Long Island.
Eddie Bert, Dave Brubeck, Chico Hamilton, Percy Heath, Teo Macero, Marian McPartland, Billy Taylor, Clark Terry and Billie Ryan Walsh will be cited "for extraordinary achievements
as jazz musicians and life-long contributions to the legacy of jazz as America's premier artistic contribution to the world."
The awards will be announced and presented during a celebratory benefit for WPBX FM on July 5 from 7:30 to 11:00 pm. "It will be an evening of cocktails, summer dinner and
dancing at the Wolffer Estate Vineyard on Sagg Road in Sagaponack" noted Alexandra Penn-Bibb, co-chairperson of the benefit.
Entertainment will be provided by George Gee's Orchestra and Jazz Vocalist Carla Cook.
The awards have been designed and produced by the Megna Glass Studio on Bay Street in Sag Harbor. The proprietors remarked that there is a close rhythmic and energetic relationship between the glass blowers at work and the music from WPBX that accompanies them.
