Dr. Creighton Wirick will speak as part of the John P. McGrath Seminar Series in the Marine Sciences of Southampton College on Thursday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Duke Lecture Hall. His talk is entitled "Climate and Climate Change - What Do Scientists Really Know?"

Wirick is Chair of the Environmental Sciences Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A biological oceanographer, he was responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the BNL moored fluorometers used to measure the cross-shelf exchange of phytoplankton. He is also involved in various aspects of biogeochemical cycling, mathematical ecology and instrumentation in BNL's Oceanographic Group including: measuring air-sea gas exchange, describing spatial and temporal distribution of plankton, developing instrumentation to measure photosynthetic parameters, and estimating primary production from photosynthetic parameters and oxygen evolution. He currently oversees BNL's Climate Change and Environmental Remediation Research programs.

Dr. Wirick received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at the University of Utah and his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Washington. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union and serves on the DOE Environmental Management Strategic Laboratory Council.

The last lecture in the series will be on May 2 with Dr. Daniel Costa, from the Department of Marine Science, University of California, Santa Cruz. His talk is titled "How to make a living when you feed at sea and breed onshore: Pinnipeds, penguins, and albatrosses."

The lectures are sponsored by the John P. McGrath Fund of Long Island University and the Marine Science Club of Southampton College. For further information contact Larry Liddle, 631-287-8399 or 631-287-8400, or lliddle@southampton.liu.edu.
