Southampton College's student newspaper, The Windmill, won four awards this year in the Newsday School Journalism Contest. The annual competition looks for Long Island's best high school and college newspaper editors, writers and graphic artists.

In addition, one high school and one college student is awarded the prestigious Alan Hathway Award for Outstanding School Journalism, given in honor of Alan Hathway, a former editor of Newsday. It carries a $500 cash award.

Last year, Southampton College won more Newsday awards than any college on Long Island. This year, The Windmill still fared well, placing second overall with four awards, including Newsday's top honor.

Teresa Stewart, a sophomore from Allentown, Pa., received first place in Commentary and the esteemed Alan Hathway Award. "She is a remarkably talented writer, a great organizer and a natural leader," said Jerry Domatob, The Windmill's advisor and Southampton College communications professor. "She has a great knack for journalism and is a rising star." Stewart is the managing editor of the paper and will take over as Editor in Chief this fall.

Norvel Wright was awarded second place in the Local News/History category and Alvin Catriz was awarded the third place prize in Typography and Layout. "They strive towards excellence," said Domatob of the students. "It's been a great experience working with them. They'll surely be able to use these skills to advance their professional goals."
