- After a successful three-week run of "The Hobbit," local theater troupe The Southampton Players announce their upcoming season.
And as they did with "The Hobbit," the troupe that's well known for taking risks has chosen a schedule sure to keep their fans on the edge of their seats. "We like to do the plays other community theater companies wouldn't even think of doing," said Players director Michael Disher. "We're constantly pushing the creative envelope and it builds excitement with our actors, who by their nature want to push their limits and the limits of theater in general. That energy is felt by our audiences, who respond overwhelmingly and keep coming back."
Next up for The Southampton Players is the seventh-annual "InterAct" series of locally written plays that feature over 60 different roles on January 31 and February 1, 7-8. All shows are at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 general admission.
This is the fourth-straight year that the plays in "InterAct" are all home-brewed, most of them coming out of Southampton College's esteemed MFA in Writing workshops with famed cartoonist and humor writer Jules Feiffer, award-winning playwright Robert Reeves, and Time magazine essayist Roger Rosenblatt. "InterAct" provides the only local, adult-written original theater on Eastern Long Island. Auditions for "InterAct" are January 6 at 6 p.m.
Then, The Southampton Players tackle Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" March 27-30 and April 3-6. Auditions will be held February 10-11 at 6 p.m.
Finally, The Southampton Players will stage their annual summer musical. In the past two years, "Cabaret" and "A Chorus Line" drew capacity crowds and rave reviews. This year, The Players hope to keep the momentum going with the rollicking comedy "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" June 6-8 and 13-15. Auditions will be held April 14-15 at 6 p.m.
All shows and auditions are in the Avram Theater at Southampton College. For information, call (631) 287-8480. The Southampton Players website is www.southampton.liu.edu/news/players/players.html. ctures/goback.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="[back]">
