Downtown Messiah is a hip, genre-stretching, New York version of Handel's holiday classic. Combining traditional orchestration with the varied musical heritages of folk, jazz, rock, gospel, blues, bluegrass and a cappella chorals, this reinterpretation is a respectful and modern musical treat. Downtown Messiah airs at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 21.
Joy To the World with Bob Thompson is a one hour live performance jazz special hosted by pianist Bob Thompson with jazz vocalist Allan Harris. Airing on Monday, December 23, at 3 p.m., this program features instrumental and vocal arrangements of standard holiday tunes plus a few new songs sung by the Brooklyn native.
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, is the live worship service from King's College Chapel in the U.K. that combines scripture and song -- taking the listener from the Old Testament foretelling to a birthday celebration. A Festival airs on Tuesday, Christmas Eve at 10 a.m. live and will repeat at 5:30 p.m.
Also on Tuesday, December 24th, Welcome Christmas! 2002 airs at 3 p.m. Welcome Christmas! Is a collection of works from around the world including works by English composer Clive Muncaster, Belarus native Sergey Khvoshchinsky, and from the Americas: Aaron Jay Kernis, Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, among others.
Carols For Christmas 2002 is a live broadcast from Washington National Cathedral featuring the choirs of Men and Boys and Men and Girls, each presenting beloved carols along with beautiful medieval selections. The Medieval, Renaissance and Victorian carols, as well as the instrumental performances, and choir collaborations -- from one of the great sacred places in North America --define this musical extravaganza. Carols For Christmas will air Wednesday, Christmas Day at 3 p.m.
