Nicholson is a Professor of Art at of Long Island Universitys Southampton College, where he has taught full-time since 1986. He received the Universitys Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement in 2000.
The artist uses his garden as a source of imageryin this series, he focuses on the atmosphere and mood of twilight. The works, which alternate between abstraction and representation, can be read both as individual paintings and as a connected series. The installation reflects the artist's interest in exploring the possibilities of large-scale compositions comprising several smaller elements.

His work has been included in numerous group exhibits, notably "AdoRnmenTs," which originated at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in SoHo and traveled nationally, a touring show to American consulates in Brazil; a print exhibition in Germany; and, under the auspices of the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, at international art fairs in Miami and Los Angeles.
Nicholsons bibliography is extensive. His work is illustrated and discussed in several books about Long Islands landscape, and he has been reviewed in numerous daily and weekly newspapers and arts publications. Interviews with him have been broadcast on BBC Television and locally on LTV Channel 27 and Riverhead Cablevision.
