- In remembrance and recognition of the tragic events of September 11, Southampton College of Long Island University has planned several memorial observances as fall semester classes begin.
On the morning of September 11th, Associate Dean of Students Amy Urquhart has asked students, faculty and staff to observe a moment of silence during the time of each attack on the World Trade Towers. At noon the College will host a ceremony in the Avram Theater during which members of the campus community will share through poetry, verse, music or other means their remembrances or recognitions. A member of Project Liberty of Suffolk County will be in attendance. Project Liberty is a disaster-recovery program created by the New York State Office of Mental Health to provide free crisis counseling, education and referral services to those affected by the World Trade Center disaster.
At 7 p.m. in the evening the College will host a sunset walk from the Student Center patio to Shinnecock Bay for a period of silent meditation. The Residence Life Office is also coordinating a program to raise funds for a bench on campus in recognition of September 11. The College lost two of its alumni in the tragedy, Linda K. Gronlund and Christopher Racaniello. Memorial Scholarships have been established in the name of each.
Long Island University Vice President for Academic Affairs Jeffrey Kane has asked faculty from each of the University's campuses to consider using class time on September 11 "to help our students understand and cope with the global realities that have indeed become very personal and immediate the time you spend with your students may lend this semester a renewed spirit of inquiry and dedication to live what is highest and best in each of us."
