- High off of the high kicks of this summer's "A Chorus Line," The Southampton Players kick off their 2002-2003 Season with the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's, "The Hobbit." Auditions will be held this month.
This play with music (though not quite a musical) is the prequel to "The Fellowship of the Ring." The plot follows Bilbo Baggins' adventure with a band of 13 dwarves to reclaim the dwarves' fortune stolen by the dragon, Smaug. Along this trail, Bilbo and company encounter trolls, elves, goblins and, of course, a gold ring once owned by Gollum.
Forty assorted roles are available requiring varied levels of vocal and dance ability. Those auditioning should come prepared with a one-minute monologue that illustrates their vocal projection and articulation and 16 measures of a folk tune or ballad to be sung a cappella.
Auditions will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, September 17 and 18 at 6 p.m. in the Avram Theater. All ages are encouraged to audition. No roles are pre-cast. Production dates are November 8-10, 15-17 and 23-24.
Theater Director Michael Disher stated, "This will be one of The Players' most ambitious projects. I foresee an amazing opportunity for my cast to subtract all that is earthly and inhabit supernatural personas. My requirements are imagination, animation and a large dose of innocence."
