The Southampton College softball team snapped a two-game losing streak, winning the first game of a doubleheader against league rival St. Thomas Aquinas here on Sunday.

Southampton College scored early in the first game and held on for a 3-0 shutout. In the second game, the Lady Colonials were not able to pull out the win, despite strong hitting late in the game. They lost the second contest 4-1.

In the first game, the Lady Colonials came out hitting. Sophomore Erin Molloy went 2-for-3 in the game, with a single, double and a run scored. Stephanie Valentinetti was 1-for-3 with a double. Allison Hoyt was 1-for-2 with an RBI double. Shayma Hill pitched all seven innings, fanning four batters and allowing only six hits in the shutout.

In the second game, St. Thomas Aquinas scored three runs early. In the fifth inning, the Lady Colonials finally got on the board but it was too late. For Southampton College, Robin Owens and Allison Hoyt were each 1-for-3. Owens scored the Colonials' only run. Freshman Justine Barra stroked a double.

"We got down early in the second game, and waited too long until we realized we could win," said coach Cassie Arroyo, whose team lost a doubleheader at New Haven Saturday.

St. Thomas Aquinas is 11-17 overall, 5-7 NYCAC. Southampton College is 8-16, 7-7 NYCAC. The Lady Colonials are home Sunday vs. Philadelphia in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
