- Coming away from a loss to Vassar just the day before, the Colonials of Southampton College were eager to win a volleyball game vs. Queens and avoid a six-game losing skid.
And the Colonials started strong and fought a tough first game, winning 30-27. The second match showed Southampton's slight fatigue in playing two games less than a day's time apart. Queens came out on top with a commanding 30-18 victory.
Southampton came back to win the third game by a margin of 30-27. Queens, however, answered with a win: They squeezed passed the Colonials by only two points to win the fourth game with a score of 30-28.
Similar to the day before, the match would be decided in the final game. The Colonials started slow but fought back to tie the score 7-7. Still, the Knights took the lead to 12-10 and never looked back en route to a 15-11 final game and 3-2 decision.
"We played great and came out strong, but we need to learn how to finish in the end," said Carmen Walker, head coach of the Colonials. "Our bench came out and gave us the spark we needed, but it wasn't enough."
Scott Schult led the team with 17 kills. Joe Daigler had 16 kills and seven digs, while Chris Mazzarella led the team with 10 digs.
"We are coming together as a team. We are just one step away from the team we can be," said Schult, Colonial co-captain.
Southampton's record falls to 3-6 (0-4 EIVA Hay Division), while the Knights improve 7-4 overall. The Colonials next game is at Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
