Psychobiology, the study of brain and behavior relationships, will be the topic of a special seminar on April 22 at Southampton College.

Also, trophies will be presented to the top three finalists in the recent Southampton College Brain Bee: Vikas Gupta of Comsewogue High School, Port Jefferson Station, First Place; Saroj Kunnekkat, of Deer Park High School, Second Place; and Rohit Rapala, also of Comsewogue High School, Third Place.

Special recognition will be given to Gupta, who went on to represent Long Island and won second place and a $2000 scholarship in the 2002 International Brain Bee.

Recent research on the brain by Southampton College Professor John Neill and his students will also be reviewed. This research shows that diet and rewarding activities can actually protect the brain and help it recover from stress.

Professors Neill and Paul Forestell will also describe educational opportunities for high school students and teachers in Psychobiology at Southampton College. A summer workshop on Psychobiology will be held this July 7-12. High school teachers and students will have a chance to meet the faculty and ask questions about the summer workshop. Past participants of the workshop have included winners of Brain Scholarships to Southampton College. The Brain Scholarship is worth $12,000.

Second, teachers and students can learn about a free preparation course for the 2003 Southampton College Brain Bee to be held in February. High school teachers can help their students as well as earn professional development credit by attending the Summer Psychobiology workshop and the Brain Bee preparation course.

The Brain Awareness Seminar is free and open to the public. It will be held Monday, April 22 at Southampton College at 7:30 pm in Room 201 in Chancellors Hall. For more information, call Professor John Neill at (631) 287-8202.
