Southampton Men's Soccer Loses ECAC Title Game on Penalty Kicks

- The #3 University of Bridgeport upset the top seeded Southampton College Colonials in penalty kicks at Southampton on Sunday, Nov. 17. Both teams played to a 4-4 tie after 110 minutes. Bridgeport won on penalty kicks 4-3.
Eight yellow cards and three red cards set the pace of the game. Southampton started the scoring when Markus Persson got an assist from Andreas Nilsson at 12:40. Bridgeport struck right back when ECAC MVP Lee Sharkey assisted Cheikh Diop at 14:15. Bridgeport then scored the next two goals in the half as Sharkey scored on a penalty kick at 29:47 and Curtis Marcellin scored unassisted at 30:22. Bridgeport went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
The Colonials came out of halftime strong when Richard Hedman scored off an assist from Markus Persson at 62:35. Bridgeport's Alen Malecevic got his second yellow card at 63:55. Southampton took advantage of the opportunity when Markus Persson scored off an assist from Leonardo Garcia at 71:48. The fate would soon turn as Southampton's Stefan Holmqvist got his second yellow card at 72:16. Southampton stormed back when Nils Stavenberg shot a rocket from 40-yards out to put Southampton up 4-3 at 74:52. Sharkey tied the game up at 77:27 off an assist from Ingo Budmundson to send the game into overtime.
The first ten-minute overtime went scoreless. With 7:20 remaining in the second overtime, Southampton's Christopher Sam got a red card. Southampton held Bridgeport scoreless to send the game into penalty kicks.
Bridgeport goalie Daniel Cassels stopped nine shots on the day. Southampton goalie Rikard Alsterberg had five saves and gave up three goals in 45 minutes. Due to an injury, Brian Hilton took over for the rest of the game collecting 13 saves while giving up only one goal in 65 minutes.
Southampton's Timo Kost and Victor Vergara made penalty kicks for Southampton. Bridgeport's Curtis Marcellin, Mike Veizaga, Lee Sharkey and Josh Kirk each made their shots to win it for the Purple Knights, 4-2.
Bridgeport finishes the season at 13-8 while Southampton drops to 11-4-2.
