Matthew Klam, an award-winning fiction writer, journalist, and essayist, will be the featured speaker at Southampton College's "Writer's Talk" lecture series. His talk is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the College's Duke Lecture Hall.

Klam's works have been featured in The New Yorker, Harpers, Allure, The Washington Post Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine, where he is a frequent contributor. In 1999, The New Yorker named him one of the twenty best young fiction writers in America, and in 1997 he was an O. Henry Award winner. His first book Sam the Cat and other Stories, was published by Random House in 2000 and selected by Borders for their New Voices Series. The San Francisco Chronicle said his work "repeatedly nails the fragile braggadocio of the modern American male.... each story takes on a memorable life of its own, thanks to Klam's ability to find the perfect word or phrase."

Klam is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Hollins College, and has taught creative writing at various institutions including St. Albans School, American University and Stockholm University in Sweden.

Klam's talk is sponsored by the Southampton College Masters of Fine Arts in Writing Program. It is free and open to the public. Call (631) 287-8432 for more information.
