- Peter Maniscalco of Manorville has been named Coordinator of Environmental Programs at Southampton College of Long Island University. He will oversee an energy audit of all campus buildings, update recycling and composting projects and design activities to raise student awareness of environmental issues.
Maniscalco, 61, has been one of Long Island's leading advocates for the environment for the last 25 years. He is Chairman of the Suffolk Legislature's Peconic River Community Oversight Committee, which monitors the cleanup of Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is a member of Suffolk County's Rhabdomyosarcoma (an aggressive childhood cancer) Task Force, searching for causes of this deadly disease. As a long-standing member of the Citizens Advisory Panel's (Long Island's Energy Watchdog) Board of Directors, he serves as Chairman of the Education and Media Committee.
For the past four years, Maniscalco has taught as an adjunct professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Southampton College. He created a popular course titled "Spirituality of the Environment." Maniscalco lectures on "Spirituality, Ecology and You" at schools and community centers. He is also a freelance writer.
