The John P. McGrath Seminar Series will open with Dr. Carl Safina of the National Audobon Society with his talk entitled Song of the Albatross; The State of World Fisheries on Wednesday, September 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the College's Business Center Lecture Hall.

Safina, Vice President of Marine Conservation for the National Audobon Society, is the author of "Song for the Blue Ocean:Encounters Beneath the Seas and Along the World's Coasts," a book said to take its readers on a global journey of discovery of the world's changing seas, deftly weaving adventure, political analysis, science, and insight into the human condition. Safina has been close to the sea all his life, as a fisherman, a seabird scientist, and a voice for restoration of abundance and vitality in the oceans. He has served on the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, the Smithsonian Institution's Ocean Planet advisory board, and the World Conservation Union's Shark Specialist Group. In 1990 he founded the Living Oceans Program at the National Audubon Society, where he serves as the program's director. Dr. Safina is a lecturer at Yale University and is a recipient of the Pew Charitable Trusts' Scholar's Award in Conservation and the Environment.

The series will continue on Wednesday, October 2 with Dr. Darcy Lonsdale of SUNY Stony Brook speaking on Long Island's Brown Tide.

The lectures are sponsored by the John P. McGrath Fund of Long Island University and the Marine Science Club of Southampton College. For further information contact Chris Gobler, 631-287-8397 or cgobler@southampton.liu.edu.
