- More than 140 people attended the presentation of the first annual Environmental Leadership Awards given by Southampton College At Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead on Thursday, October 24.

(l-to-r) Marty Shea, Chief Environmental Analyst for the Town of Southampton's Department of Land Management; Nassau County Legislator Lisanne Altmann, Chairperson for the Long Island Power Authority's Clean Energy Panel; Anita Wright, an educator with the Group for the South Fork who has created and taught environmental education programs for schools across the South Fork; John McCrudden, Director of the Cooperative Education, Internship, and Career Center at Southampton College, and Peter Daum, chemist and division head in the Atmospheric Sciences Division of Brookhaven National Laboratory whose work is focused on the effects of energy related pollutants on the atmosphere.
Joe Yaiullo a 1985 graduate of Southampton College and now a curator at Atlantis Marine World, gave "back stage" tours of the facilities and guests were able to watch the feeding of the octopus and the coral reef fish. The College's program in Marine and Environmental Sciences has placed 33 of its students in co-op and internships at Atlantis Marine World in the past two years.
