As the sun set on a cloudless night, Dylan revved up the capacity
crowd with new songs off his critically acclaimed "Love and
Theft" album along with popular classics "Like a Rolling Stone,"
"Blowin" in the Wind," "Everybody Must Get Stoned" and "Forever
Young." Dressed in a black cowboy-style shirt and white hat,
Dylan played 15 songs and three encores ending with "All Along
the Watchtower." Accompanied by his band, he delighted the crowd,
playing both harmonica and guitar.
Celebrities in attendance included Billy Joel, who drove his
Harley backstage, movie and TV star Michael J. Fox with wife
and actress Tracy Pollan, cartoonist Gary Trudeau, TV journalist
Jane Pauley, and artist Chuck Close, among others. More than
40 East End caterers and restaurants filled the VIP tent with
food and beverages.
All For The Sea has become a popular Hamptons tradition, benefiting
students in Southampton College's marine and environmental science
programs. The concert series has raised more than $7 million
since the first one in 1992. Jimmy Buffett began a string of
consecutive sellouts with his 1996 All For The Sea show. Since
then, artists James Taylor, Rod Stewart, Tom Petty, and Paul
Simon have also sold out the popular venue.
The marine and environmental sciences programs at Southampton
College are nationally acclaimed for their excellence and have
produced 33 Fulbright Scholars in the past 27 years. On the
doorstep of the Atlantic Ocean, Southampton College is located
in one of the most ecologically beautiful but fragile areas
of the country. The rhythms of the sea are as much a part of
the College as salt air and ocean breezes. The Marine and Environmental
programs have capitalized on this superb natural laboratory.
Alumni enjoy distinguished careers in leading marine laboratories
worldwide, and the College is the official North American affiliate
of the Jacques Cousteau Society.
Previous All For The Sea performers were Crosby, Stills &
Nash (1992), Tina Turner (1993), Foreigner and the Doobie Brothers
