Charles G. Hitchcock, Professor of Sociology and former Director of the Social Science Division, has been appointed Interim Dean of Academic Affairs at Southampton College. He takes over from James Larocca who has stepped down to focus on his primary interests in teaching and writing.

Dr. Hitchcock has been a member of the College faculty for 35 years. He has served several terms as chair of the Faculty Council, and in 1999 the University awarded him the Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. Among the many leadership positions he has held on the campus are Director of Special Academic Services, Director of Counseling, and Director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program. He also coached the men's tennis team.

After graduating from college, Dr. Hitchcock spent two years teaching in Bangladesh in the Peace Corps. That experience and his local activism have made their way into his classroom lessons over the years. A resident of Springs, Dr. Hitchcock is on the boards of the Springs School and the Alternatives counseling center and is an East Hampton Town Democratic committeeman. He is past chair of the East Hampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals and past president of the Retreat, a shelter and advocacy agency for domestic violence victims.

Larocca will remain at the College as KeySpan Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and continue to be involved in a number of academic initiatives that he led at the College.
