- Oscar-nominated director Anthony Harvey will present his film, "The Lion in Winter," as part of a World Cinema course at Southampton College. The discussion and presentation are free and open to the public, on Monday, April 15, at 6 p.m. in Duke Lecture Hall.
The screening is the finale of four days at the College devoted to James Goldman's masterpiece. The Southampton Players will stage "The Lion in Winter" in the Avram Theater on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15/$10 students/seniors. For reservations call (631) 287-8480.
Harvey, a resident of Bridgehampton, attended the play's opening last week and was honored at a reception afterwards at the College. The 1968 movie is considered a classic and was a springboard for actors Timothy Dalton and Anthony Hopkins. Goldman won an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation. Katharine Hepburn won an Oscar for Best Actress. Peter O'Toole won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Harvey was nominated for a Best Director Oscar.
Professor John Reilly, an acclaimed filmmaker who also coordinates the film program at Southampton College, will serve as moderator at Monday's talk. "The film is considered so powerful and intimate at the same time," Reilly said. "It's a great honor for us to have Anthony Harvey visit and hear the story behind the making of such an important film."
