- Hoping to raise awareness for the lack of affordable and emergency housing in the area, Southampton College students plan a protest on Thursday, May 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., on the south end of the campus followed by a campout and morning demonstration along Montauk Highway.
Speakers will include people currently living in emergency housing and area residents who no longer can afford to live here. Local community organizations will also be on hand and offer presentations and additional information. The event was organized as part of a class on 'sustainable cities? and is supported by several campus organizations, including PEACE (Protecting Every Aspect Concerning the Environment) and Step Team, a campus dance club. Students plan to camp out on the lawn for the night to show their support for those who lack adequate housing in the community. In the morning, students will greet commuters along Montauk Highway with affordable housing posters and signs.
Thursday night's protest is open to the public. For further information, contact Environmental Studies Professor Scott Carlin at 631-283-8238. ctures/goback.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="[back]">
