University Announces Trustees Award for Scholarly AchievementProfessor of Political Science and History to be Honored for Outstanding Work

- Donald G. Baker, a Professor of Political Science and History at Southampton College, has been selected to receive the Long Island University Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement (TASA) for 2002. Baker will be honored along with recipients from the other campuses at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 30 at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University.
Each year Long Island University honors faculty members from its three main campuses for an outstanding scholarly achievement or a body of work accomplished during their lifetime.
Baker earned his BA and MA in Political Science from Denver University and went on to earn his Ph.D in Political Science & Psychology from Syracuse University in 1961. Early in his career, he served as Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the American Studies Program at Skidmore College and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the Graduate School of Public Affairs, State University of New York. He was the Founding Director of Southampton College's Social Science Division serving from 1964 through 1970.
He served as a Visiting Distinguished Research Fellow in Sociology at Victoria University in New Zealand, a Visiting Fellow at Yale University, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Interracial Studies at the University of Rhodesia and the University of Zimbabwe, and was a Rhodes research grantee at Oxford University.
Baker served in consulting positions in the Peace Corps, for the New York State Department of Education, and for the United States Agency for International Development. He was presented with the National Endowment for the Humanities award for summer research at Yale University for Politics of Racism and European Colonialism, and the City University of New York Graduate Center for Psychoanalysis and Politics.
Baker is married to Dr. Barbara L. Sands, Professor and Director of the two-campus RN to BSN Nursing Department at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue and Brooklyn. Their daughter, Catherine Baker, is a senior at Mercy High School in Riverhead.
