- Researchers will announce a groundbreaking, high-tech new aerial mapping program for Long Island's South Shore in a lecture and press conference on Thursday, April 11, at 4 p.m., in Duke Lecture Hall at Southampton College of Long Island University.
After an Honors Program lecture titled "Airborne Laser Mapping of the Hamptons' South Shore" by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of the International Hurricane Center (IHC) at Florida International University, there will be a question-and-answer period on the upcoming, unique summer mapping project.
A team composed of scientists from the IHC, professors and students from Southampton College' Marine Science Program, and faculty and cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point will be involved in the study, which will look at coastal evolution and erosion. The project is being funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is sponsored by the Eastern Long Island Coastal Conservation Alliance and Southampton College of Long Island University.
