The Southampton College men's lacrosse team scored an upset win over New York Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 11, and now the Colonials have their eyes set on making a run at a national title. Also last week, the Lady Colonials softball team moved above .500 in league play with double-header wins at Mercy College.

Overcoming a 4-0 deficit, the Southampton laxmen handled NYIT 14-11 in their league opener. Larry Falkman made 23 saves, many of them point-blank, after rallying his previously cold and outraced defensemen. By the second period, NYIT was worn down and the Colonials took over with an 8-0 run that lasted into the second half. Senior captain Mike Daquino, who leads the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring, rifled in five goals and dished an assist. Sophomore attackman Will Campbell added four goals and an assist. Southampton is now 6-1, 1-0 NYCAC.

A penalty-riddled game where even NYIT's coach was flagged, the toughman contest ended up being Southampton's first win over NYIT since going to Division II in 1993. As of Monday, April 9, NYIT was ranked No. 3 in the nation and Southampton No. 8. Now the Colonials are primed to make the NCAA Tournament -- the first ever for the lacrosse team -- if they can beat league powers Adelphi and CW Post. Both games will be at Southampton, on April 25 at 3:30 p.m. and May 2 at 4 p.m. respectively.

Meanwhile, the Southampton College softball team improved to 6-4 in league play with a double-header sweep at Mercy on Tuesday, April 10. They are in position to make their first playoff appearance since 1997.

The Colonials throttled Mercy 15-1 in the first game and 12-0 in the nightcap. Kim Carroll (season ERA: 1.96) struck out six batters while Rosie Zollo and Erin Molloy each hit 4-for-5. Molloy had three RBI and Karen Geaney had two RBI. During the second game, pitcher Shayma Hill had nine strikeouts in the five-inning mercy-rule-ending contest. Once again, Zollo dominated at the plate batting 4-for-5 and driving in two RBI.

Rosie Zollo leads the team in hitting

Zollo, a 5-foot-2 freshman second baseman from Hicksville, NY, has been a pleasant surprise for first-year coach Cassie Arroyo. 'she is a total team player who is willing to give whatever it takes to play and win,? the coach said.

Zollo is hitting .353 with 16 RBI and four triples in 23 games. On April 9, she was named NYCAC Rookie of the Week. The 5-foot-10 Hill, another freshman and Zollo's roommate, is second on the team in batting at .286.
