Fax: (631) 283 4081David Tomb, a contemporary practitioner of portrait painting, will exhibit twelve of his works at Southampton College's Avram Gallery from November 5 through December 7, 2001. These works on paper, which range from 1987 to 2001, are portraits of the artist's friends.
For the past fifteen years Tomb has embraced portraiture, but has abandoned many of the conventions associated with this traditional genre. His mixed media works often combine unnerving and vibrant color with a singular gestural line. His strategies have been noted as deceptively simple once his paintings have been initiated by the sitting subject. After the subject leaves the room, Tomb incorporates abstract forms to create emotional and psychological components of the work, bringing a new freshness to portraiture.
Born in Alameda, CA, Tomb completed his B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting at California State University at Long Beach in 1984. He has recently had solo exhibitions at the Fresno Art Museum and the Heckett-Freeman Gallery in San Francisco. He has also exhibited widely in group and solo shows on the west coast including the Louis Newman Galleries in Beverly Hills and the Contemporary Realist Gallery in Berkeley. His work is represented in the Oakland Museum, the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, among others.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Avram Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday from 12-5 p.m., and by appointment. For information, call gallery director Beth Giles at (631) 287-8234.
