Among the authors scheduled to attend the Book Fair are children's book authors Melvin and Gilda Berger who wrote Can Snakes Crawl Backwards, What Do Sharks Eat for Dinner, Why Do Wolves Howl?, Do Penguins Get Frostbite? and Mummies of the Pharaohs: Exploring the Valley of the Kings. The Bergers have written many other question and answer books that are widely read by school-age children.
Other writers participating in the event include Helen Harrison (Such Desperate Joy: Imagining Jackson Pollack), Rona Jaffe (The Road Taken), Shana Alexander (The Astonishing Elephant), John Westermann (Exit Wounds and Ladies of the Night) and Roger Rosenblatt (Rules for Aging).
Rosenblatt, a Professor of Writing at Southampton College who also hosts the Friday evening show on WBPX 88.3, Not the News with Roger Rosenblatt, has written a book that offers funny, brilliant and wise guidelines on living. WPBX, a full service, non-commercial, public radio station, will broadcast the Book Fair live with Bonnie Grice as the host.
Author Kenneth Koch will be the 13th recipient of the John Steinbeck Award which will be presented at the Book Fair. Koch has published many books of poetry including The Gold Standard, New Addresses, 1999's Making Your Own Days: The Pleasure of Reading and Writing Poetry, Straits and Sleeping on the Wing: An Anthology of Modern Poetry with Essays on Reading and Writing.
Since its inception in 1977, the John Steinbeck Project has raised funds for Southampton College of Long Island University, which have been used to establish a Visiting Writer's Program, the annual Steinbeck Lecture, student writing awards and scholarships, and acquisitions for the College Library.
The $15 tickets can be purchased at the door for this rain-or-shine event. The Benson Gallery is located at 2317 Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton.
