Southampton College's Avram Gallery hosts an exhibit of intricately woven paper works and installation pieces March 19-April 27. Seong Chun's "Inward, Outward, Interrupted" will be on display weekdays 12 to 5 p.m. with an artist's reception on Thursday, March 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. Call 631-287-8234 for more information.
Based on the structural form of Piet Modrian paintings, and titled to reference individual Modrian works, this is Chun's newest body of crocheted paper sculptures, which incorporate color as well as her signature black-and-white text on paper. As in all her work, Chun utilizes an art-making process comprised of movements and moments that are constant and rhythmic. Her new paper objects stick to a purity of form that's concerned with mapping space, both real and abstract. "The subject of space reflects an important paradoxical premise of my work ? a physically limited space that is conceptually boundless," Chun said.
Chun's work was recently seen in the "Good Business Makes the Best Art" exhibit at the Bronx Museum, and in the "Fixations: The Obsessional in Contemporary Art" exhibit at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisc.
