Brian Quist, a senior in the Friends World Program at Southampton College, will host a screening of his documentary entitled, "We Are Refugees" on Wednesday, December 5 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Duke Lecture Hall at Southampton College.

The 60 minute film is an account of the lives of a monk and a young girl who fled Tibet in 1998. Lobsang Chenjor is a former political prisoner who spent 11 years in prison before escaping to India. Tsering Lhamo went to India to get the education that she knew she could not receive in Tibet. The film follows the two refugees as they adjust to exile in India.

Quist is currently producing another film, "A Day in the Hype of America," which is in post production in New York City. The film compares the ways the country reacted to the millennial hype by following the lives of four unique Americans as they await the arrival of the new millennium. The four stories were shot simultaneously in New York, New Orleans, South Dakota, and Arizona. The film will be sent to national and international film festivals in the beginning of next year, where Quist hopes to secure a distribution deal.

The screening of "We Are Refugees" and the introduction of the new film, "A Day in the Hype of America" will both be held December 7.

The Friends World program requires classroom study, immersion language training and independent fieldwork in at least two foreign cultures. Under faculty guidance, students develop skills and competencies in a major academic field by combining research, hands-on experience and analytical writing.

Founded by the Quakers in 1965, Friends World became nonsectarian in the mid-1970s. In the 1991-92 academic year, Friends World affiliated with Long Island University and received full accreditation by The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The program is currently based at Long Island University's Southampton College. Friends World has centers in the United States, China, Costa Rica, England, Israel, India, Japan and Africa.
