On Monday, April 2nd at the Avram Theatre at 7:00 p.m., Cuban-American performance artist and playwright Alina Troyano, also known as Carmelita Tropicana, will take the stage. Troyano/Tropicana appeared at the College during last June's "Wicked Women & Wayward Girls" lecture series, which hosted noted novelists, playwrights and poets who have written about defiance against the male-dominated status quo. Troyano is author of "I, Carmelita Tropicana," which is a collection of plays and performance poems based on her stage act.
As one of the most colorful and electrifying performance artists in the world, Alina Troyano's one-woman shows, plays, and essays have astonished audiences and readers with her creativity and the urgent political energy underscoring her work. As a Cuban and a feminist, she draws insights from her experiences by playfully drawing attention to them in order to reveal all there is at stake in the creation of identity. Fans of performance art will revel in her original and powerful work.
On Tuesday, April 3rd a panel discussion on "Multiculturalism & Difference" will be held in Chancellors Hall, room 236 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. It is sponsored by Southampton College's Friends World Program.
On Thursday, April 5th the film Black & White will be presented at Duke Lecture Hall at 9:15 p.m.
