Southampton College will add a new Master of Science degree program in Special Education this fall. The program entitled "Teaching Students with Disabilities" is designed for certified teachers to earn an additional New York State approved certification in special education. Students in the program may pursue certification in two different concentrations: teaching children with disabilities at the childhood level (grades 1-6) or at the adolescent level (grades 7-12).

"Teachers completing the program will be well equipped with the skills and knowledge to teach children with disabilities in either an inclusion setting or in a self contained classroom," said Southampton College Education Division Director Dr. Larry McCann. "The courses focus on specific aspects of the teaching and learning process within and across the boundaries of the school environment, the home setting and the therapeutic facility."

In addition to intensive on-campus sessions, students will participate in a variety of field placements. Research trends and methodology, technology behavioral approaches, instructional modifications, the New York State Learning Standards, and collaborative strategies are among the critical topics addressed in the program.

The new program is the seventh graduate program offered by the College. It joins degree programs in Childhood Education, Literacy Education, Accounting, Business Administration, Fine Arts in Writing, and Professional Studies in Gerontology. For further details on the program, call 631-287-8200.
