631-287-8313Southampton, NY - Watercolor paintings by artist Neill Slaughter of scenes from everyday life in India will be on display at Southampton College. Many of the works in this exhibit were on display at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, last year in celebration of 50 years of India's Republic.
"Images of India" runs February 5 through March 9 in the Avram Gallery and a reception is planned for February 8 at 5 p.m. The gallery is open weekdays 12 noon to five p.m. and by appointment. Call (631) 287-8234.
Slaughter's paintings were inspired by a four-month visit to India on a Fulbright scholarship. There, he found stark contrasts: significant monuments surrounded by shantytowns; immense poverty but people with such a deep spirituality that they live contently and gracefully. "My extensive journey throughout the country was, without exaggeration, an intense, life-changing experience," he said. "Though traveling in India is both physically and mentally demanding, it is the most visually stimulating place I have ever witnessed; a painter's paradise." Slaughter previously painted an acclaimed African series, and often chooses his subjects based on his concern for human conditions.
Slaughter is an associate professor of art at Southampton College of Long Island University and resides in Southampton.
