Former NASL pro and SUNY-Old Westbury head coach Patrick Horne has been named men's head soccer coach at Southampton College, Athletic Director Mary Topping announced today. He joins one of the nation's premier Division II teams - a squad that has won two titles and an NCAA berth in the past two years and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation.

"We're very excited to have him. He's going to be terrific," Topping said. "Patrick Horne is a master motivator and recruiter. He knows Long Island's high school talent pool well and, being a former top player, will command respect from his team."

He replaces Southampton College's winningest coach, Ed Goodhines, who left to head the athletic department of a boys' academy in Virginia. Goodhines' career record was 114-62-9. The Colonials won the Northeast Regional title in the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and last year took their second-straight New York Collegiate Athletic Conference title. Over the past two seasons, Southampton is a combined 15-0-1 in league play.

Former Swedish pro Caspar Pauckstadt had originally accepted the Southampton coaching position, but recently had to resign due to serious knee surgery and recovery taking place in Sweden.

At Division III SUNY-Old Westbury, Horne took over a team that was 5-11 in 1997. In 1998, the Panthers went 11-5-2, and in the past two seasons Old Westbury has won league titles. Last year, the Panthers were 7-0 in Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference play and 12-5-3 overall. Horne is 30-19-7 as a college head coach.

Horne, who played in the now-defunct North American Soccer league that featured Pele, was born in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and raised in Brooklyn. He currently resides in Baldwin, NY. He received a BA in Mass Communications from Southern Illinois University and has written a weekly cricket column for Newsday since 1985. He also teaches English at Virgil I. Grissom Middle School in South Ozone Park, NY, and has coached Long Island Junior Soccer League under-17 select boys teams. Topping said that Horne's knowledge of the area and its top young athletes will prove invaluable to the Colonials down the road as the team recruits its next generation of league all stars and All Americans.

The new coach inherits most of the components of last year's championship team with one major exception. While star scorer Peter Nillson (18 goals) returns, the team loses All-American goalie Roger Svensson to graduation. However, Svensson will be on the sideline as assistant coach.
