The course will cover techniques for catching marine species such as striped bass, fluke, blackfish, flounder, and tuna, which are found in local Long Island waters. The course will also discuss fish finding, bait and lure selection, terminal tackle, knot and rig tying, safety, chumming, and baiting techniques. Each participant will receive a computerized handout for each species covered in class as well as sample copies of The Fisherman and Salt-Water Sportsman magazines. There is an optional fishing excursion planned for the conclusion of the course.
Captain Jerry McGrath, an avid fisherman and former charter boat skipper, will teach the class. He has written articles for sportsfishing publications and given numerous sportfishing lectures throughout the Long Island and New York Metropolitan area. Captain McGrath has produced the video "Sportfishing on Long Island" to be released this winter, and was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1994 by the Suffolk Association for Continuing Education.
The class will be held on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. January 8 through February 12. Registration begins the first week in January. To register or to obtain more information, call the Southampton College Continuing Studies program at (631) 287-8316.
