The four-page, color brochure was written by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research & International Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
"With the hurricane season approaching, this publication should help residents to be prepared in the event a storm makes landfall in our area," said Dr. Leatherman. "Hopefully, we will escape yet another year without any problem, but to be forewarned is to be forearmed."
The initial release of the publication will be at the July 23rd Paul Simon Concert to benefit Marine Science scholarships at the College. The official release will be in the August 1 edition of the Independent newspaper and the August 2 edition of the Southampton Press.
The publication shows the paths of the past five hurricanes to hit Long Island as well as a detailed map of the track taken by the 1938 Hurricane, the most severe storm to affect Long Island in memory of those alive today. Information on storm surge, hurricane intensity, wind warning signs, emergency contacts, and how to prepare for a hurricane is also included.
ELICCA, in collaboration with Southampton College, has jointly undertaken a multi-year project to study the eastern Long Island shoreline and its environs in order to explore possible solutions to the erosion problems and way to maintain overall beach quality. In addition to "Hurricanes and the Hamptons," the project has published "The Hamptons' South Shore: A History of Beach Changes and Storm Impacts," "Beach Basics: A Reference Guide to Coastal Terminology," and "The Hamptons' Lifesaving Stations: Historical Landmarks as Shore Change Indicators."
