Avram earned his M.D. at the University of Geneva after receiving his B.S. from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus in 1951. He served his internship, residency and renal fellowship at the Long Island College Hospital where he was appointed the first Chief of Nephrology in 1970. Ten years later, the hospital recognized his accomplishments by naming its new hemodialysis facility the Avram Center for Kidney Diseases. Dr. Avram is past president and founding member of the New York Society of Nephrology and a past president of the New York Regional Renal Disease Network. He has also held the position of clinical professor of medicine at the State University School of Medicine-Health Science Center in Brooklyn. He has published three books and written numerous scientific articles in the field of kidney disease. His accomplishments in the field of artificial organs have helped make nephrology a clinical specialty.
In 1985, Dr. Avram received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus and in 1988 he was honored with an honorary Doctorate of Science from Southampton College. In 1998, the Fine Arts Theatre at Southampton College was named The Avram Theatre and the gallery space in the Fine Arts Building became known as Avram Family Galleries.
Avram serves on the Board of Governors of St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital and The Long Island College Hospital, is co-chairman of the World Affairs Council, and is a board member of Pianofest. He and his wife, Maria, have five children: Rella, Marc, Eric, Mathew and David.
The Gallery is also showcasing Picture Prone, a mixed-media show featuring artists Dominique Figarella, Susan Graham, Ruby Jackson, Daren Kendall, Al Souza, Nick Tarr and Jil Weinstock through August 31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment.
